This was in my bucket list of the top restaurants in Stavanger to try with my wife. The experience in itself is not bad. Rough stone and red bricks on the walls, dimmed lights and soft music created a good ambience, although the cables running and old PVC cut-out pipes could have been hidden in a better way.

The menu changes every month, and we went for a 3-course meal, which was complimented with some small tasteful bites in between the chosen courses. Food was presented well, in decent-sized portions, with also warm bread and whipped salted butter on the side (which is not common in Stavanger).

We also chose the wine tasting package, to compliment the food, but that was the biggest mistake we made. The main course (fish) was accompanied with a Chianti (red wine), which wasn't a great compliment to the food. But what was worse, it was served cold.
Also port wine to accompany the cheese selection was not the best choice in my opinion, and also the port wine was served cold.

The restaurant is quite pricey, but we knew it in advance, so this doesn't affect the overall rating.

Overall it was not a bad experience, but I would suggest to stay away from the wine tasting package. It is extremely pricey and it's not to the same level of the experience as the food.

We'll be back again, for sure.......

We visited Nero for the third time last night and agreed that each visit has been an exciting experience. The restaurant has a nice locality with a distinct character, low lighting, no music and a good feeling of privacy. We were met, as the other times, by friendly staff who gave us a feeling of being there just for us, and explained the menu in the smallest details. The food was delicious, last night being no exception. We enjoyed the unusual combinations of tastes, exquisite and full of surprises in each course while the wine matched and enhanced the taste of the food. As for the dessert, with its light and delicate taste, it concluded our evening in the best possible way. Nero, by its exquisite food and its atmosphere, stands out as unique among the best restaurants in Stavanger and we look forward to visit it again.

Nero, an exquisite restaurant in Stavanger

The little town of Stavanger has been graced with four to five really excellent restaurants the last couple of years, Nero being among these. Even though it has been around for some years now, it seems to be not that well known, a kind of hidden gem. I had the good fortune to visit not only Nero, but also Tango, another one of these fine places, on two subsequent days enjoying their September menus. The real treat was that so many courses had the same main ingredient. That makes a comparison inevitable. For me the peak was the not-very-well-known fish hake (lysing in Norwegian). It’s amazing, come to think of it, how these animals, swimming around on the bottom of the sea, gives such a pleasure in our mouths – that is, if the chef knows what to do with it. Well, they do. Both of them. The one on Tango makes it taste youthful, chic, and oooh so good. On Nero it is somewhat different – the flavors take longer time to reveal themselves, like they are in no hurry. But they seem never to stop! And the same with the lobster and the chicken and the lamb. Both places serve excellent wines to all courses. For me the surprise this time was a Greek white wine on Nero. So, who won? That is the wrong question, since they’re both a gift to us, and I was completely won over.

This celebration visit to Nero was long awaited and was to be the highlight of my latest trip to Stavanger. The reality however was nothing short of abject disappointment
The fine dining cuisine failed to meet either the standards or originality of other 'comparable' establishments previously experienced (abroad or in the locality).
The restaurant staff failed to exhibit enthusiasm, drive or any motivation for the products delivered - in fact demonstrated a profound disconnection from the anticipated experience.
The Nero Restaurant falls short
