We've been coming to L'Escalier for many years now and have very rarely been disappointed with any aspect of the experience.

You are welcomed into the small bar area by the professional (largely French) staff) on arrival and will be offered aperitifs and canapés while you mull over the menu...

The menu always displays a level of culinary flair and innovation from chef/proprietor Dean (other half the lovely Amelle will charm your socks off if she's serving!) - and if you don't fancy anything there, he's usually happy to offer a personalised alternative depending on what's fresh in that day. And the food is just superb when it arrives!

The atmosphere is smart without being at all pretentious. "Real" tablecloths, soft lounge-esque music and a stylish feel to the decor add to the refined but relaxed ambience.

The prices, while not excessive, reflect the quality of ingredients and care that's gone into the food. That said, they're genuinely not much higher than many other far inferior eateries in town, so I'd certainly say that the extra few bob is worth it. They do an early bird special if you want to sample the fine cuisine without spending too much, and believe me, you'll consider it money well spent!
