Athens had also a major role to the cultural development of ancient Greece. In the world’s first democratic city, a theatre was launched and philosophy, historiography, oratory, sculpture, architecture, etc were greatly developed. Greatest personalities of the antiquity were born in
Athens, such as the drama poets, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes, the philosophers Socrates and Plato, the historians Thucydides and Xenophon, the orators Lysias, Isocrates and Demosthenes, the sculptor Phidias etc. It was also the philosophers Aristotle, Anaxagoras, Zeno and Epicurus who lived most of their life in

Athens was the centre of the major philosophical schools of antiquity, such as Plato's Academy, Aristotle's Lyceum and the school of Epicurean philosophers & Stoics.
